Why did they lock up zombies in a barn on The Walking Dead?

They had like 50 zombies locked up. Now they are trying to bust out.

Also do you think they can save the farm, or are they gonna be overrun by those zombies.Why did they lock up zombies in a barn on The Walking Dead?
I believe they are Herschel's friends/family/neighbors/staff of the farm and he is keeping them alive hoping a cure will be found so he can save them. He possibly might be trying to come up with a cure himself. No, I don't believe the farm will be overrun by zombies and I don't believe the zombies in the barn will be saved.
