It was a virus.How did the zombies start in The Walking Dead?
In the Season 1 finale, the group found out that this is due to a virus. The virus kills the person, then reanimates the animal portions of the brain that prompts them to roam and want to feed.
However we have not yet heard where the virus originated or if it was natural or man-made.
