Why did the walking dead stop airing?

I recently got really hooked on a tv show called the walking dead but after watching it over the last couple of days, it seems like the series (or at least the season) just kind of ends out of no where. It doesn't really end on anything more than a cliffhanger and after only 6 episodes (one of the shortest seasons for anything!). So why did it stop after only 6 episodes and will it be coming back ever?Why did the walking dead stop airing?

Well from my understanding they only ordered 6 episodes initially for the first season because they were not sure how the show would be received, if people would like it or not. It ended up being a hit and yes it has been renewed for a second season this fall (I believe October).Why did the walking dead stop airing?
They only filmed very few episodes.

It was just a short story, not a series. And the living were complaining too much about the smell.
